week 1

getting from 0 to 1

Dear board, first of all - thanks for making the time.

My brother, our partners, and I spent all Christmas behind our computers preparing the Jared for launch. Initially, the thought was to launch on the 1st of January, but as always problems appear and things take longer than expected.

But now, we can proudly announce that the first Beta is ready for launch, and we can onboard the first 100 beta users.

In this email series, I’ll take you behind the scenes of building Jared. Every week I’ll update you as a part of our public board. That also means, that there’ll be full transparency and I will appreciate your feedback at all times.

Ups and downs

  • The biggest win this week is, that we are finally ready to launch, and onboard our first users.

  • We’ve been grinding all Christmas, starting all over with a completely new system. It’s a great feeling to see the beta work, after many long hours.

However since this is something new to the market, and we are currently maximizing the technology available to us, we have faced some scaling issues.

  • The capacity as the moments is limited to 100 users (and with that amount, we are not even sure whether or not it crashes). But as Zuckerburg says, move fast and break things - and that’s what we are trying to do.

  • Likewise aren’t we able to process as many articles as we wanted to at the moment.

  • On the upside, if the service crashes that means that users are coming in - which is good.

The scaling issues can be fixed, also within our current setup - so right now it’s all about the hours we are putting in.

Below is a picture of how it started as a manual process at the beginning of December and what we’ve been able to pull off in just a month, converting it all into an automated system - that looks way better as well.
